Question about GPU to your TV via HDMI and sound performance

Hi.

The question I wanted to ask your people is when you conect up your NVIDIA 400/500 Series GPU to your TV via HDMI for big screen gaming, do games still use your sound card processor
for sound processing performance or do they use the sound processing chips built into the GPU?

Another question, is the processing chips built into the NVIDIA 400/500 Series GPUs as efficient in sound processing performance etc as popular sound cards like X-Fi Titanium especially when gaming?

I do this but using an ati card and the hdmi goes to a hd amp first. You can still use the audio from your sound card if you want but in all honesty the onboard sound on modern graphics cards is very good. I seem to remember though that the gf100 based graphics cards cannot do lossless hd audio over hdmi and the drivers for the newer nvidia cards were not very good although this may have changed. This was one of the reasons i avoided the 470/480 when they came out and as i use my pc as part of my home cinema.

The reason why I asked the questions above is because as sound cards do help with gaming performance, I was wondering if connecting your computer to your TV via HDMI
on your GPU would mean programs etc would be using processing chips built into the GPU rather than your sound card and if it would affect gaming performance.

I doubt you'll be able to notice any drop in fps using the gpu for sound, I doubt there would be any drop anyway.

One thing I dislike about GPUs with the mini HDMI port, is it's very easy to knock the mini HDMI to normal size HDMI adapter you get with the cards
straight out of the port and using thick HDMI cables that are heavy can be problematic too.

I got a swivlable (if thats a word lol) 90 degree hdmi for that very reason and have had no problems.
