Hi all
Quick question, i have a koolance waterblock for my 690 but thge pads i have are a little big i think as pcb 1 is reading 40 degrees and pcb 2 is reading 70 degrees.

Can i take these 1mm pads away and just use thermal paste like EK thermal paste?

Whaty about placing a pad over the gpu chip ityself to help contact between the block and gpu?

I usually just use a single line of paste in the middle of the chip. Then when you press the block on it spreads out evenly, you don't need a lot of it for it to work.

Pads usually have glue on them and can be hard to remove. They are usually best for sticking ramsinks etc

Ok thanks....Some of the vrm's on the gpu.....is it ok to put paste on these instead of pads....this is the question that im asking....?
not the main chip but the vrm's?

If it's a full cover block then you can put paste on the vrms. If your using a universal block, which only covers the GPU chip itself then you will need to stick ramsinks to each vrm chip (which are usually self sticking).

You need to use the correct thickness thermal pads on everything except the core with that block.

If you use thermal paste on the vram/vrm's, the block will likely not make contact and your temps will be a LOT worse. Look up the manual pdf.

Example:

I have Ek blocks on two 7970's and a 7990. They use a combination of 0.5mm and 1mm pads for vram/vram's.
I also have an Aquacomputer block on a 2nd 7990. This only uses pads on the vrm's.

DO NOT use a pad on the main chip!
