Question about GTX 960

Hello all, Okay... so with the release of GTA V, I currently have an 'ATI R7 200 Series' which I thoght was a R7 240X.. but thats another story lol.

Although I can play GTA V in high settings for most options... i can't really visually see the game for what it is. I mean, the textures is the only option that must be in "normal" or it exceeds my memroy allocation by 600+mb makign the game choppy here an there, it is playable.. but annoying. I'm looking around at graphics cards and I'm thinking of the future.. Iwant something that will play GTA V in high/ultra settings with no lag at all an everything on max(willing to accept some compromises) but I also want it to be future proof too in the sense that a year from now, I wont be having to ugprade as my card doesn't support the game anymore.

Now I noticed that there are so many GTX 960's out there some with DirectX 12 support (which i didnt even know existed yet) would it be wise to focus on a card with DirectX 12?

Also, what is the best GTX 960 card going at the moment? As I see so many versions all with very minor changes in clockspeed and when i say minor, i mean like 10-20... is it really worth an extra £20-30?

I've done some research on youtube to see the differences in frame rates and qualities among many cards and the nvidia range seem to hold a far more continous flow of FPS without any sudden lag spikes which I like the sound of, even though ive always been an AMD /ATI man until now. This is why im asking about the 960 specifically.

Whats your thoughts? am I making a mistake in thinking 960 is the better card out there at the moment that isnt too expensive and delivers what i described? or would there be something thats out there cheaper and delivers equal quality e.t.c?

thanks for your replies!

[UPDATE]
Just to include my current system specs:
OS: Win 7
CPU: i3 3220 3.40ghz
Ram: 8GB
GPU: AMD R7 200 Series (1GB)

Personally I think the GTX 960 is overpriced quite a lot for what it offers. It has a crippled memory bus and doesn't offer good value for money.

What is your budget and rest of your system spec inc PSU and monitor resolution?

Also need to think about whether you're likely to upgrade your monitor in the near future for example freesync/g-sync.

Sorry I'm not familiar with freesync/g-sync. and I may upgrade monitor but no plans to at the moment to be honest. Lets go with the assumption I won't be upgrading the monitor.

My Resolution is: 1920x1080
PSU: 550W

My budge, hmmm I'd say for a graphics card, I started at £100.. but thats increased as research has been done but I'd say the absolute max is £200.

Do you have any recommended GPUs that are more value for money?

Hi.

Can I ask what case+PSU you also have?

This is possibly the best GTX960 - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-277-MS&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=2379 - for the price and performance, warranty and a free game.

But there is also a 770 - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-209-OK&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1750

My Resolution is: 1920x1080
PSU: 550W

Thanks I will checkout the 770! Is there any reason why you consider the 770 to be better? is it like what the previous reply was about, money for value?

The thing is any card with less than 3GB will be unable to put textures on GTA5 on anything other than Normal. This is going to happen more and more so really a 280 is the minimum or get a 780.

First up there's no such thing as future proof.
The 770 is a much better card than the 960.
Problem is neither of them are or were ever high end cards. If you want the term future proof to mean anything at all then you need to spend the absolute most you can afford.

I suggest finding another £30 and buying a 290x which was a high end card from launch and is right up there with the other sensible high end cards. It will absolutely slaughter both the 960 and 770.

Amen. :)

Okay so I think I'm going to go with the R9 280x it seems to be roughly what I can afford... which kinda brings me to another problem. I see so many versions of this card once again, ranging from £199 to £400. I really don't understand why the same card can be so different in price? I mean I'm clearly ignoring the 300+ ones as those must be scams? but for example I see this card for £260 and £204 and £219 e.t.c overclockers sells it at £199 but I'm confused, which such a big difference in price?

Also is the 'Vapor X' technology worth the extra £££ ?

I am guessing you mean 290X? as there is no way a 280X should be over £200 and I would not even pay £200 for a 280X when a 290X can be had for £229 or more.

I still need to know what PSU it is, 550W from a £10 potato compared to 550W from a quality and trusted make is a big difference.

Haha. I did honestly find 280x's priced at £400... which I thought was insane... and had to be scams? unless they made typo's on their websites.

but assuming I wanted to get a 290x for £230, would that be with overclockers? as I'm sure I looked into the 290x's and I found only £300 priced ones? Although I will have to look again it would seem! [UPDATE] I've seen it on overclockers 230, I see the reason I didnt look into it further, its preorder only. I guess ill wait for it then since its only 30 pound more. I heard that "new" versions are often bug fault prone, and its better to wait for a few generations of a card to come out before getting it?

my power supply has been going for years now, its never let me down so far but it is: antex neohe550

Here are two 290Xs,

These have been on the market almost since the 290/290X core was released which was over a year ago. they are this cheap to clear stock (for the new 300 series cards) and compete with Nvidia.

Why would you want to wait and pay more for the same card when it goes off offer price.

confused... so those links to the two 290x cards are over a year old? even though it says pre-order? I assumed that meant it wasn't released yet and I can pre-order it, in that case I guess it just means its out of stock?

Also how does my PSU sound?

And lastly is Vapor X tech any good or just a gimmic?

The cards have been on sale for over a year (maybe longer).

Example - http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/asus-radeon-r9-290x-matrix-review,3.html - review dated March last year.

They say pre-order as they are not instock yet (they ran out I guess) and its a special offer price for the next bunch they get in.

Vapor-X is very good, I have owned a 290 (nonX) Vapor-X and was very happy with it.

I purchased a 280 (not x) recently and in my opinion (for the money) it's an extremely underated card. It has 3GB vram and runs GTAV very nicely on my 4690k rig at 1920x1080 res.

I think the GTX 960 is a terrible card for the money and if you want to spend more - grab the 290x deals. Don't think the 280x is worth considering tbh whilst these are at that price.

There is also a gtx 970 in the b grade section for £239, they often pop up there for 220-240, i got one for a friend the other day out that section and it was perfect. A 970 is a very good option imo (plenty of vram haters out there i returned my 970 due to this however @ 1080p it is not a problem) imo this is a better performing card over the 290 and much cooler running and less power consumption. (You will thank the cooler running in the summer months) however the 290 is a solid choice still and very good value for money but thats only due to it being quite old and AMD dragging their heels getting the new cards out.
