Question about Half Life graphics

I played Half Life round my friends and he has the same size monitor as me (19" 1440x900) and he can choose that from the menu..i recently bought the game and i have a different menu to him its really old looking and i can only go to 1280x960 max..i cant really describe my menu but its totally different to his...his was the same as the Half life 2 menu..also the worst part is that my Half Life seems to have only 16 bit colours help please!!

He have half-life source by any chance and you the original?

Been ages since i last played the 1st half life.

nope i changed to d3d and opengl and all the same options..and no he has the original like me but he has half life i bought half life generations that comes with blue shift etc

Enter your cd key into steam, make sure it updates to the latest version...

Then select ''widescreen'' under display mode (in display options). And then if you go to the resolution list there should be WS reso's.

I bought mine on disk, but as far as I know it's exactly the same as downloading it from steam.

It still installs steam.

EDIT: Actually, it sounds like he's got Steam and put his CD Key into it to get the games through there.

Not sure about (modern) HL, but HL2 does some weird thing where it filters out the widescreen resolutions unless you tick a box or set the aspect ratio, something liket hat.

Yes, you have to choose "widescreen" or you can't get to the res you want.

It was nothing to do with that..i had a completely different menu system but DW i fixed it now
