Am I right in thinking that if a hdmi output is connected to a non hdcp compliant connection then no video will be outputted at all regardless of resolution?

only if the hdcp encryption is enabled on the hdmi output. But any hdmi input is hdcp compliant. The only thing that would be of issue is if you convert your hdmi out to DVI in and its not an hdcp compliant DVI display.

So same reply. If your DVI screen is not HDCP enabled AND the HDMI has HDCP enabled, you will get nothing.

If the HDMI output does not have HDCP enabled, youre fine (for now).

If your DVI monitor supports HDCP, you're fine

the cable has nothing to do with it btw, its all about the screen.

I thought the hdmi specification required all hdmi outputs to be hdcp enabled otherwise they wouldn't get the license for the device as someone could make a perfect movie copy through hdmi? Hence why the ps3 won't output any video without a hdcp display even for games?

Youre absolutely correct, that the HDMI spec requires HDCP, but there are examples of devices with HDMI outs that do not support HDCP.

There are several professional devices with HDMI out that do not have the encryption enabled, noteably for converting SDI & HDSDI video so it can be displayed on 'cheap' HDMI enabled TV screens.

So, you can connect a non HDCP enabled DVI monitor to an HDMI source, but practically, in terms of consumer equipment, it would be aswell to say 'no, you cant.'
