If a bought a motherboard with onboard HDMI audio and connected it to my AV amp via HDMI (also supports HDMI audio) then would I would have no need for a sound card right?

Would this play all my music and avi files also or does it only play HD audio?

Cheers

you do need a soundcard, its just the motherboard has already got one.

so you're question is "i dont need another soundcard do i ? which you dont :) The motherboard's onboard soundcard will output via a HDMI connector. So yes, you'll be able to get all audio output to your reciever, not just HD audio.
