Hi, can someone give some advice on the following please.

I am thinking of building a HTPC soon, at the moment I use my laptop to tv via. The laptops hdmi socket which sends audio & video direct to the tv.

Now if I build a htpc & put a graphics card in that has a hdmi socket on it, will that send both audio & video to the tv or just video?

Just not sure how you go about this, thanks.

Eventually I will get a better AV amp that has hdmi inputs, but at present my av amp (sony) doesn't have hdmi.

Thanks.

I do realise if when building my htpc I choose a motherboard that has a optical out I can send the audio to my av amps optical inputs. Just curious about it over hdmi.

depends on the graphics card, for HTPC get one of these: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-193-XF&tool=3

This will do 1080P and Dolby/DTS audio over HDMI :)

I wouldn't recommend getting your sound from the onboard sound card. I have an Asus P7P55D Pro mobo and had it connected to my AV receiver over optical. Even though it decoded Dolby/DTS it sounded flat. Now Im using the Optical on my XFI treme Gamer and its a lot better. The sound gtm my 5850 was the best, but I found it was taking a few FPS off my games hence I resorted back to using my XFI sound card.

Usually if the card has an HDMI port then it is designed to transmit sound. Sometimes you need an extra driver though. As mentioned before exactly how it works is card specific
