I've updated my chipset drivers recently and just wondering, is Intel Rapid Storage Tech just for RAID or SSD's?

My current controllers are

Intel(R) ICH10 Family 2 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 2
Intel(R) ICH10 Family 4 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 1

Any point in updating these? Because the new chipset drivers didn't touch them.

Btw i'm on a X58 board.

Yep i'm a noob so please be nice.;)

Cheers guys.:)

Anyone? :(

Can I just install it in Windows 7(OS already installed)? As i'm not using RAID, just a single drive, and which version do I download?

Just had a look in my device manager it says I have ACPI x64-based PC, should this make any difference? Think i've read somewhere (can't remember) that it only supports AHCI based systems, might be wrong, so please correct me.

Cheers guys.

Is your BIOS setup correctly? Is it operating in AHCI or IDE mode? Or in RAID mode?

It definitely won't install in IDE mode. But I *think* it should in AHCI, and obviously it does in RAID mode.

Note: I don't recommend changing this setting on the fly, it *could* require a Windows reinstall.

PS: ACPI is something totally unrelated, don't worry about that.

Just to add to this.. If you should find your running in IDE mode then you need to perform the registry hack here, then restart and enable AHCI in the BIOS. As NathanE mentioned you might not be running in AHCI mode and that's why the RST driver package is failing to install.

It's a pre-build from OcUK, the BIOS hasn't been touched. Maybe i'm being silly but to me the system is working fine atm, i'm probably being a little picky so think i'll leave it as-is rather than messing with the BIOS god I don't want to install WOW again!;)

Listen man thanks for the help.:)

But if it's running in IDE mode, your SSD will be under performing and TRIM support won't function.

IDE mode is purely for compatibility. It shouldn't be used on a modern Windows PC.

Oh I misread, my bad. Still, even with a HDD you won't be getting things like NCQ. Performance won't be as good as AHCI or RAID.

Just had a look in my BIOS, it's set to IDE. The this is I just don't want to mess anything up and end up having to re-install windows, as i've said it's an OcUK build, should I give them a ring just to make sure about the AHCI option?

Because truth be told i'm pretty happy with the performance of my PC.

Just not that confident in messing with stuff that I don't understand.

I've just done the hack and enabled AHCI in the bios, and installed RST, the system startup is quite slow.

Jeez hope I have not messed something up.:(

A little icon in the taskbar has appeared saying my HDD is removable that's after changing from IDE to AHCI, is this a problem? Should I leave it alone and not worry?:o

God I hate computers sometimes.

Cheers guys.

That's normal davedudes fella. It's trying to tell you it has now become plug + play which you likely won't use anyway...

By the way - don't hate them as they are intended to make our life easier :)
