Hi everyone, I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to provide me some information about the differences between the CPUs mentioned in the subject line. From what I have read CPUs like the Q6600 and Q9450 are much quicker than the Xeon Quads is this correct? Are there major differences between the CPUs? For instance a 2.0GhZ Xeon would outperform a 2.0GhZ Dual Core or 2.0GhZ Quad Core?

Regards, Pikkon.

Ehhhh....no.

Xeons come in two flavours, socket 771 (Intel's server socket) and socket 775 (Intel's current consumer socket). They are the same as Core 2s but apparently their prefetchers are tuned towards server applications as opposed to consumer level things like games etc. The basic architecture is identical however.

For example, I have a Xeon X3350, which is the same as a Core 2 Q9450. But I bought it because CPUs intended for servers tend to use better quality silicon, although my chip isn't that great an overclocker.

Basically, as long as you compare the current generations of both CPU ranges they're going to perform the same, clock for clock, as they are the same, just with different stickers on them.
