question about IP addresses

I am trying to control most of my AV gear via my WP8 phone or android. All seems to work well for a few days, then suddenly I will loose control of devices.

I noticed the other day my IP address had changed when I looked in my settings, so I am thinking that maybe when I restart my router it is randomly changing IP addresses, maybe?

Is there some way I can force the same IP address to be used each time?

Thanks so much!!

:)

In your router settings you should be able to assign static ip addresses to your devices, it varies a lot between routers but look around the lan/dhcp settings.
Alternately you could use the devicenames instead of ip addresses if the apps/usage allows it.

You would have to pay your ISP for a Static IP address. Your public IP address will randomly change when your router drops and reconnects.

Edit: Sorry, thought you were controlling your devices out of the house :-P

Just connect each device to your home network, let your router assign them each an IP address, then within the router reserve, or manually enter static

Ahh sorry I thought you were talking about inside your network, If you are wanting to control something from outside your network you will need to pay for a static ip or use a dynamic dns service which will give you a hostname to connect to, but you will need an always on device inside your network to keep it up to date with any changes to IPs. Lots of routers/NAS boxes support this.

It is probably the DHCP which has assigned different IP addresses to your kit on restart.

Remember you have an external IP with which your router connects to the ISP, and you'll have internal IP's (192.168.x.x for example). All your kit will have an internal IP for communication around the network, and will use the routers external IP to connect to the internet.

You should have no need for a static external IP, unless you are trying to control your AV gear through the internet (as opposed to while at home connected to wifi etc).

Your router will have the option to assign an IP to a device and withold it for use purely for that device.

You need to explain a bit more what you're trying to do..

Control your stuff over your Wifi?
Control your stuff over your Internet connection?

I want to control my devices over wifi only. I have 2 x AV receivers and media players etc that I want to control. I have the apps to do it and all works well until the router restarts then I have to reset each device

I need to force my router to give each device a ip address and not change it

I have a plusnet fibre router

Any decent router will allow you to assign ips to Mac addresses. Every network adapter has a unique mac address.

I've never used that router, so can't tell you where to look.

Sometimes it's called static dhcp. I'm sure someone else will tell you if that router can do it

Don't the av receivers and media players have the option of you statically assigning them an IP rather than dhcp ? This way you won't have to worry about mac reservations on the router

Most devices that hook up to a network "should" give you this option, if not and its dhcp only then yeah try mac reservation

Log in to the router.

Click on the device you want to configure (it'll be on the main page).

Click configure in the top right

Tick 'always use this address' or whatever it says.

This is really really frustrating!.... There is no settings on my Technicolor TG582n that allow me to what you all have said.

Not only this!, on my smart TV some days my media player shows, some days like tonight it wont.

What can I do here? I was told by the plusnet engineer I could only use the Technicolor TG582n router they provided. Its just annoying how things randomly work when they want

Help please :)

I believe that the TG582n will support DHCP reservations, but not via the GUI. If you can track down the instructions you should be able to assign them from the command line (CLI).

Plusnet don't really care what router you use. They just won't support third party devices.

I am using a 8 port Ethernet switch so maybe that is causing problems as well.

All my Wifi devices work fine all the time but its the devices connected to the port switch via Ethernet, that seem to work when they want
