Question about Laptop GPU heatsink.

Hello.

A while back I bought a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M for my Laptop and I removed the
pre applied thermal paste and put my own on it.

I have noticed for ages that my temps have been quite high for this GPU on idle and load.

In the middle of the GPU heatsink there was a silver square part that looked like silver paper stuck to it.

When removing the pre applied thermal paste when I first installed the GPU, I actually removed silver square part
from the middle of the GPU heatsink because it peeled off easily enough after gripping a bit of the edge of it with
my nails and I thought this was also meant to come off too, thought it was part of the pre applied stuff.

I am now starting to wonder if that square silver part or whatever it is was actually not meant to be
taken off, the silver square part actually gives better contact between the heatsink and GPU and
helps disperse the heat better than the bare heatsink metal or etc.

Am I correct about this that this part was not actually to be taken off?

If this is correct then does anybody know what the silver square part is for and what's the that part called and
made of and where to buy the stuff or what I could put in the middle of the heatsink before re applying the
thermal paste that would do the same job just as efficiently as the silver stuff?

Thanks for responding.

I am sure now that the silver square part wasn't meant to be taken off because I
have had a look at some screenshots of heatsinks and some of them have a silver
square or circular part in the middle or center of the heatsink where the CPU or
GPU normally gets in contact with the heatsink.

Could anybody tell me what the stuff is called and made of so I could
buy more of the same stuff to put back on the heatsink?

Thanks.

that silver pad square is normal on lappy heatsinks and also on some desktop cpu heatsinks. its actually the thermal compound pad that they use. it can and should be removed by a modded seeking better temps. just make sure you used enough paste and screwed down the heatsink tight enough., also lappy heatsinks are nutorious for collecting dust so make sure that you clean it out when possible.

also for lower temps and better battery life look into bios modding to lower voltages if possible especially on idle clocks. you can get good results if you read up on mvktech.net forums.

also for high end gpu in lappys dont expect less than 50-55c idle temps anyways.

So the silver square part isn't anything to worry about and is not necessary?

My idle temp I have always had from the GTX 480M on my Laptop is about 50c or just a bit over that.

My main concern is my GPU load temps. Somebody told me that it's best to keep the temps on the GTX 480M
from going over 72-75c but mine goes over that quite easily when the GPU is being stressed.

Also my GPU VRM temps are always between 105-110c.

The temps I get are from stock, non-overvolted or overclocked.
