I'm a bit puzzled by these. What makes them so amazing? For the average computer user, are they worth it? I keep seeing talk around them targeted more at hardcore gamers. Also, I'm wondering if the keys are 'noisy', are they very 'clicky'?

The sticky keyboard guide will answer most of your questions.
For gamers they are positive, very responsive and all presses get registered.
Whether they click much depends on the type of key (see the guide).
For just typing I doubt you would get any advantage.

That's not what I`ve read.

I`ve done a bit of reading, and apparently mechanical keyboards are much better to type on (as long as you choose the correct type of switch). I'm thinking that brown switches are a popular choice.

Typing on they are far superior. I have a brown switch Ducky Shine 3, I got into habit of taking it to work every day as typing on it I am so much faster and accurate. It really is night and day for me.

The reason for me is the keys react much more precisely, bounce, feel and overall feedback even typing is amazing. Dare I say, for gaming I don't really think it was much of an improvement or made me any better/quicker at FPS or RTS games.

If you can afford one, you will never go back from a mechanical.

I don't know. I don't find them that 'amazing'. They are more consistent, more durable. If you have the money, then why not. For the average user, they are probably not worth it. They are quite noisy as well.

Typing is subjective. I prefer my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard (K740 predecessor). Scissor keys action, low profile, much quieter. I really like my MX browns though. I'll always go mechanical over membrane, especially for gaming and such.

Browns basically replicate your regular membrane keyboards the closest. They are middle of the road. Blues have a nice 'click' to it, quite a bit noisier. Either IMO are fine for someone not used to mechanicals. I'd steer away from reds. Use o-rings if you feel the key travel is too large (one of the complains of Cherry mechanicals).

I always use a gamers mechanical keyboard because from what I can see, the key locations are always in the same place, which is unlike bog standard keyboards.

I suppose it is a matter of personal taste, personally I prefer my Cherry Reds for gaming and a membrane for typing; although I can type quite happily type on my mechanical. All I can suggest is try it and see.
