hi, got a question about the contrast and luminance of new TFT's
basically i've got a very old lcd(from about 2002) that's-
Maximum luminance 250cd/m2
Contrast 300:1

so very low now i need to the contrast and brightness set to very low or it hurts my eyes after a hour or so.
now i'm looking to get a new 17inch wide screen tft next week(after using a laptop with a higher res i can't get used to the lower res again.
one i've been looking at is-
Brightness 270cd/m. Contrast 700:1

now my question is will this turn out to be much brighter that the one i have atm? as that could cause me a problem.

thanks

not really, you can always turn the brightness down to suit. The 270 cd/m2 figure is just the specified maximum luminance achievable, but a figure like that is still pretty low by modern standards anyway.

I agree with Baddass here :)
but may I ask why you have chosen a 17" WS TFT? i would recomend a min of 19" ws

cheers guys.

i decided on a 17inch as a 19inch would be too big for my needs and how far away i sit from the screen(only use the pc for the web and a bit of football manager)
got a 15.4inch laptop and that is a good size for where the screen will be so 17would be best i think

no such thing as too big when it comes to a TFT :p

oh really? ;)

Well my 22" WS is more or less the same as the 17" CRT on the outside! lol bezels are much smaller now though, res higher and god has it made a big difference on my desk! i got loads more space!!

just need to get rid of my 14" VCR/TV combo for an LCD TV then im sorted :)

In seriousness, I think that depends a lot on the individual and the tasks involved.

I saw a couple of Dell 3007s at the weekend for the first time and personally I thought they were too big. I don't need that much desktop space (nor do the vast majority of people I'd wager) and I noticed the owners weren't running any games at native res as the graphics power required would be immense, assuming the game even supported the resolution.

I'm sure plenty will disagree with me but frankly my 24" is more than big enough and I really don't know what I'd do with the extra space of a 30".
