Question about motherboard

I'm wanting to buy this for a project but dont want to be buying a graphics card aswell because it wont be used for long, just 2 or 3 months then I am building a new system
Hello Danny1107,

Welcome to OcUK forums! :)

Please read the forum rules and enjoy your stay!

Have you already got an Intel® LGA775 processor because if not then you can look at the latest AMD products which include kick*** motherboards with the best built in graphics, all very reasonably priced, all very fast and stable . . . . should be able to pick up a processor and motherboard for £100 all in . . . any good?

Hello Danny1107,

Welcome to OcUK forums! :)

thanks for the welcome :)

and i've already got the processor its in the computer im using now, but its an acer motherboard with locked bios so I cant change anything, so was just looking for a cheapish motherboard with onboard graphics just to try out overclocking really, would rarther start cheap than jump in at the deep end and overclock my new system when I get everything for it

I've got the E2160 processor, I've read and been told its possible to get a stable 3ghz from this processor with little work, if the motherboard is up to the job, so the plan is to get a new motherboard and put it on windows7 and upgrade to 4gb ram, I want to spend as little as I can but still have a decent motherboard

so any recomendations for a fairly decent motherboard with onboard graphics would be great :) budget for the motherboard is around £50, dont want to go over that if I can help it

Sounds reasonable, the problem mainly is if your looking to buy something new to clock an Intel® LGA775 chip they want you to pay £££ extra, particularly on a motherboard featuring an IGP :(

There are a few you can get but the overclocking options are very basic and normally missing the crucial vCore adjustment which is normally an overclockers main tool!

I can recommend two motherboards that are not sold new anymore afaik but I'm sure you could hunt one down at auction, as far as you wanting an overclocking friendly Value IGP-board to help you get to grips with overclocking either of these two boards from ASUS fit the bill perfectly! :)

That's true, I had an E2140 that was happy to run at 3.2GHz so an E2160 should do that or better, I do remember those chips can get quite hot though! ;)

Well I've given you two links above, I'm not sure of any Intel® LGA775 IGP boards that sell with the overclocking options you need within your budget! it may be that Gigabyte have something but I'm not familiar with their product range, you would need to search their website and download a few .pdf manuals to see the overclocking options featured in the BIOS . . .

It may be possible to buy a used Intel® LGA775 *non* IGP motherboard and a used simple PCI-E GPU for £50 if your a keen bargain hunter . . .

AMD® Tangent!

If I had my way I would get you to sell that processor and anything else from the old computer and build a new AMD IGP system which can be done suprisingly cheap, you have no idea! . . . . although that would require more effort on your behalf! ;) . . . you could even use your old DDR2 memory but would need to blow around £100 Total for chip and motherboard with every cool feature included not least of which is amazing overclocking options!

If you could sell the Intel Chip and older ACER motherboard for £20/£30/£40 quid and add in your £50 motherboard budget you virtually there!

When reading the description/features of motherboards what am I looking for to see if it has all the BIOS adjustments unlocked including vCore? (if they say anyway)

I looked at the Gigabyte motherboards cause I was told that all the BIOS adjustments are unlocked on all their motherboards, not sure if this is true or not?

also what wattage PSU would be best for overclocking? I'm pretty sure the one I have now is only a low powered thing, I can get a nice 600w PSU cheap though :)

I suppose the two main features you will need are FSB adjustment and vCore voltage . . .

I've not really used any Gigabyte boards but I've checked a few .pdf manuals of several of their boards and they do always seem to include most handy BIOS adjustments . . .

Well that's a different subject altogether . . . most good Branded PSUs are fine for overclocking these days and its Wattage would really depend on what other hardware you intend to use, just the basics and a motherboard with an IGP would run fine from something like an Antec Earthwatts 380w . . .

going to have a look at afew motherboards, got a price list from a local computer shop and theres 2 one is £40 the other is £60 both 775 socket, going to look for the specs online

the PSU I have now should be fine then, pretty sure its 450w, will check later :)

I can get an Asus SKT-775 P5B for £70 from a local computer shop, I've had a quick look at it and it seems good to me, but there is no VGA output, but there is a digital coax output, which is yellow on the motherboard, just to be sure can I use an RCA to RCA lead and plug it into my tv's video RCA input? would also use a 3.5mm audio jack to audio R+L RCA lead for sound if I can connect it this way through my tv, not sure if its different on computers just noticed its yellow and the video rca input/output on tvs is yellow

if you can connect it this way I think I'll be getting one on pay day :) thanks for any help

Danny mate, that is a complete rip-off, that motherboard is three years old and is literally right at the bottom of the Intel® LGA775 chipsets, your just throwing your money away, whats wrong with you?

I've had a quick look at it and it seems good to me
It is good and I would be happy to pay £15-£20 for one not £70 lol! :p

That motherboard and your processor together isn't even worth £70, damn son I'm trying to help you get some overclocking fun happening but your acting up!

You've got a few years old Intel® Pentium 2160 processor (1.8GHz), I think that's the one of the slowest chips they ever made apart from the Intel® Pentium E2140 (1.6GHz) . . . . Don't spend £70 on a three year old motherboard to overclock your two year old processor, it's a waste of your money ££££

Either buy a quality/pristine/100% working *used* motherboard for about £20-£25 quid for an easy life and a tinker with this E2160 you care about so much or . . . . .sell the damn thing and put the proceeds with the £70 you were gonna spend on the three year old board with no vga/correct sound outputs and buy a Modern Processor which you can obverclock and a *Modern* Motherboard that has every useful bit of technology you could need, the best onboard graphics, audio, PCI-E 2.0, SATA Raid, etc etc and you can do this for around £100 total!

  • £20 Money from sale of Intel® Pentium 2160 processor
  • £10 Money from sale of Acer/Intel® LGA775 motherboard
  • £70 Money I gonna waste on Three year old motherboard
    • £100 Total

Danny you got enough money to get yourself a nice little processor and motherboard, totally modern dunno why you can't be bothered?:D

haha, I can be bothered and I was asking to see if it was a good deal :) which is now clear to me that its not, I'll have a look about ebay tomorrow for a 2nd hand motherboard, if I have no luck I'll start looking at more modern processors/motherboards

but the main reason I don't want to spend much (hense asking about the asus motherboard before I went and got one) is cause I'll be building up a new system in the new year which will have a spec a lot higher than my current one, just want to try overclocking on a cheaper system incase anything does go wrong, that way I'm not loosing money by wrecking something in my new system :)

basic spec of my new system will be
2.66ghz intel i5 processor (higher if I have the cash spare at the time)
8gb DDR3 Ram
1024mb ATI graphics card (will buy a second one at a later date, the motherboard I'm looking at is crossfire compatable)
1tb sata hdd
600w PSU
Windows7 64bit

theres another computer shop in town so going to have a look there tomorrow, one of them stocks a bigger range of motherboards and processors but I didnt have time to go there today in my dinner break :(

Omg your rich! :D

There was I thinking your were trying to hustle a nice little system togther to learn how to overclock and after a big of digging it turns out you wanna test system to blow up before you build your *proper* Core i5 . . . . sweeet!

haha, to learn how to overclock yes, but not to blow up, and I wish I was rich, £30 a week from college isn't a great income  theres afew 775 motherboards on ebay I've had a quick look at

or can you recomend any LGA775 motherboards? :)

I already have Danny, images above, links and everything!

If you read the forum rules I linked in the first post you are not really allowed to link up competitors so careful or you may get banned from the forums . . .

You have plenty of good advice to move forward now, I specialise in helping people make a good machine without much money so that could be really helpful for you if your a bit strapped .. the system you have in mind in really killer but perhaps its a bit expensive for you at this time, there are *many* options to build a great value machine without going into debt over it!

going to keep an eye out for one of the asus boards you posted, I think I miss understood/miss read your first post :) anyway I should be able to buy one friday (if I spot any)
