I want to go and watch a movie today, went online to book tickets and the screening which I want to watch says "Subtitled for hard of hearing"...does this basically mean i've got to put up with reading as well as hearing the dialogue ;)

I've got no problems with screenings having subtitles, i'm just confused as to how it's a new release (the hangover) only has 4 showings through the entire day and two of those showings is subtitled.

When I check films like star trek, terminator and so on, no subs...seems strange to me!

Subtitled does indeed mean it will have subtitles on.

The reason many 'Big' film don't have subtitles on in their early days is because the distributor feels that it will harm box office sales. Which is pretty much true.

Surely there can't be that many deaf people in an area who wants to watch any certain film to make it worthwhile having a subtitled version. It'd probably be cheaper to have an usher with the few deaf people who do go to sit in front of them with big cards with subtitles on and putting them up in order.

I think your over-estimating the mental capacity of our staff to be honest mate :p

Without a doubt it's true, because now ODEON won't be getting 5 ticket sales from me and my mates, the only time I want to see subtitles is when i'm watching a foreign movie. I know 5 tickets is nothing to ODEON but if you compound this with the amount of nationwide showings with subtitles that regular folks won't want to go and watch, it's quite a lot.

The other thing that is confusing is that the two subtitled showings are in their biggest screens

Just means I have to go to crappy showcase instead now.
