I know these files are associated with Open Office but is there any way I can open them with MS Office - perhaps by use of a plugin? Or is it easier for me just to install Open Office and then save them as Word/Excel files?

MS Office probably won't open them unless there is a text filter you can use.
Like you say you are better off installing OpenOffice and copy/pasting them into Word or indeed save the files into an Office compatible format.
