My missus has a laptop that we're finding a bit slow. tbh the whole range of P4's passed me by. Thing is I feel this laptop can be salvaged for reasonable usage as it has a 9700 mobility and a 3.0 P4. The P4 is a prescott I believe according to a sticker on the back of the laptop. I'm not sure whether this laptop is slow because of XP and only 512mb, harddrive or the CPU.

Anyways I guess my query is, is the cpu a reasonable speed and should I just try to get 1gb of sodimm into it first.

The P4 is likely to be running quite well, but they were very power-hungry so you might need to turn off the battery saving features to get it to run faster. More RAM will also help enormously.

We typically run it off mains, so I think the profile will be full speed. It certainly makes the racket typical of a small hovercraft :). Ok will look into the mem upgrade, 1 gb should be fine as she only wants it for office/web etc.

Thanks for the advice.
