Question about opteron 144.

At stock (1.8Ghz i think) should be around same speed as a 3200/3Ghz CPU. The extra 1Mb will make a small increase in performance too. However once clocked to 2.8Ghz (which is do-able on air) it will very fast indeed - on par with the FX 57. Most will clock to at least 2.5Ghz, the better ones up to 3Ghz

with the 144 be aware that to get the best out of it you need a motherboard capable of very high front side bus speeds due to the low muliplier, so you almost certainly looking at a DFI board to get the best out of it. Other than that cracking chip. If you have a motherboard thats not as capable in the FSB department the 146 opty has a 10x muliplier so should get you a higher speeds.

I'm using an opteron 144 @ 3ghz with a 334fsb on a abit kn8. This is only a low end board but seems to clock well. This is with a Freezer 64 pro and 1.46V. It's prime stable and gets up to about 45C under full load.

How do you find the max fsb of the mobo?

The easiest way if you own it is to set the cpu multiplier as low as it will go and gradually increase the fsb until it becomes unstable. If it's not a board you own then check reviews of it. The last motherboard round up in custom pc magazine listed the maximum fsb of the boards they tested.
