Forgive what is potentially a really basic question. Have started getting out on my bike a lot more since the kids are interested in cycling now.

My current bike is old but works fine, it's a Carrera Vengeance LTD and the specs are here:

It must be about 10 years old if not more. I've not done much with it, new discs/pads and bled the brakes this year.

I was wondering if an upgrade would be worth it, this has been recommended:

I wonder if it's worthwhile or not going to be worth it. I mainly rode roads and flat trails.

so why so you want to upgrade your motherboard?

I would suggest that at the £500 price point you need to be focusing on:

A decent air fork - some bikes at this price will have a spring fork that will never feel as nice
Hydraulic brakes - cable disc brakes will never have the same feel
A 1x setup - even a cheaper groupset as you can upgrade when this wears out

Thanks for the info. I'm keeping an eye out for a decent bargain as it's a total non essential upgrade that isn't really passing the wife test.

I know not answering your question directly, but given new bikes are being suggested, does your company offer cycle2work scheme? It’s a decent tax break and interest free loan - might be worth looking at.

Thanks, they do but I'm already on car lease and it can cause pension issues with the NHS scheme. I'll probably just buy outright to save having to run all the sums.
