Considering getting one eventually on the bay, was just wondering is it both the american and japanese versions that can take a regular pc power connector with no stepdown converter or just specifically the japanese version?

As the PSU is internal, I'd guess it'll take any voltage and frequency and just need a different cable. Better check though.

Can I just ask what is your reason for wanting a PS3? Just curious.

Strictly 110v only, you'll need a step up which should only cost you around 20GBP..

Go for the US. At least you'll be able to read the instructions :p . AFAIK games are not region coded. The blu-ray player will be though..

Get Resistance of Man, and ummmmm well that's it for now unfortunately. Unless you like Ridge Racer and Ice Hockey !!!! NHL2K7.

The ps3 is not a touch on the 360 at the moment, especially when it comes to live. You must leave the game to read/send messages, you can't join friends game etc...also my pad went out of sync with the bluetooth numerous times. I know it's early days but the 360 at lauch was a lot better than the ps3 at launch, games, featurs and everything

Google for "PS3 Voltage" and you'll find many examples of people plugging UK power cables into a Jap/US PS3 with no problems at all so it is not strictly 110v only at all.

Also, to be pedantic, even if it was 110v only, a step down transformer would be required to take 230v down to 110v, not a step up :)

So its possible that the psu in the ps3 could be autosensing like many pc psu's and just changes the voltage itself? :)

Yup, from everything I've read so far that appears to be the case. I've yet to read of anyone blowing up their PS3s yet. The PSU even has a CE label on it apparently.
