Question about slipstreaming XP SP3

I am going to reload Win XP on my laptop and was thinking of slipstreaming SP3 as my install disc is sp2. The main reason is just to avoid the initial win update. I see that nlite allows you to add further updates released since sp3. Is there a way I can identify what updates there have been released since sp3 and download them?

I don't think I am going to add anything else such as drivers. Are there any problems using nlite rather than the manual cmd line method?

Also a more general question. My win disk is an oem home version that came with the laptop. I have wiped the hard drive and reinstalled once before. I made a copy of the install disk and removed the oem 'extras' and then installed from the copy. The install never asked for the serial no. I had partitioned the hd using acronis and that didn't show any hidden partitions on the hd. Where did win get the serial no from? Is it included in the oem XP disk and the install just check the laptop is the one that matches the cd? I had assumed the disk was just a generic copy and I would have to put in the no which is on a sticker on the laptop.

Finally are there any issues or problems with SP3?

thanks

Indeed i think there are only 10 or so updates. There must be an OEM sticker somewhere with your key. Perhaps on the original pack which came with the laptop?

It won't let me edit my post...

Just to add I've noticed toshibas don't ask for serial numbers when using the restore disk. I imagine the key is stored in the bios somehow? I've never looked into it

OK I willprobably forget about post sp3 updates then. I have just noticed that sp3 doesn't include updates like ie7. Is it worth trying to slipstream ie7 and .NET?

Zap, yes, the serial no is on a sticker on the laptop. I was just surprised that I didn't need to enter it when I installed from the cd last time.

Just creating a SP3 disc now, I know IE7 and WMP11 is worth putting on, fairly large downloads. Normally use .net 2 & .3 so probably put that on also (ATI drivers need it, Media Portal needs net 3)

I am considering putting drivers on now. I wasn't going to bother but I quite like the idea of them being done in one lot rather than having to go through lots of installs after installing the os. From looking at the nlite guide it says to select the .inf file. Will it then pull in automatically all the other files in the driver package? If so I can see this will probably push the size up above a cd. Is there any problem with burning the iso to a dvd?

btw looking at one of the tabs in nlite it had my serial code there so it is obviously in a file on the cd which is why I don't have to enter it during install.

Just finished it, I only did SP3, and a few tweaks/settings. Didn't install the ryan pack or drivers. Serial number/location/country settings saves time.
