Question about switches

I'm planning on getting a server set up at home, but changes are that it will be in my bedroom meaning I can't get a direct cable to it (I've already got one cable to my room, but I can't rip up the carpets again....damn parents)

If I put a switch in my room, with another patch going to my PC and one to the server, will they still be automatically assigned an internal IP via DHCP by the router downstairs, not the switch?

Switches (of the type you're talking about) don't assign addresses - they are fairly dumb devices, just directing frames at the hardware level to the relevant mac address. To all intents and purposes, it's not there - it'll work as you hope it will.
