Question about the 4890 fan noise.

Do all the 4890s have loud fans or is there one that is the best of the bunch? Or should I wait for one that is due to arrive with a quiet fan? I'm thinking that in a worst case scenario I will try to fit a graphics cooler, but won't this invalidate my warranty?

Thanks for any help.

Yeah they do, so your best of waiting for a custom cooled one, and you wouldn't invalidate your warranty, as if it goes wrong, you just put the cooler back on it came with to RMA it.

Cheers for the link. If they can sought out the fan control algorithm problem it mentions on page 27, then this could be it.

Yep, Britney is where it's at. Seeing her next to all that money just seems to make it more alluring, not sure why.

I was doing the same waiting on a better fan, not for the noise but for the cooling.

However in reality the noise is not that bad in my opinion (on a 100% fan speed yes but it never really reaches that and I'm not overclocking it)

When overclockers dropped the price to £165 I asked myself if a new fan would be worth the extra £50 + and the answer was no so I bought one of the XFX ones and am very happy with it.

Fan noise is relative, don't go on others opinion.

I have my 4890 at 30% fan speed and have never noticed it during gaming or movies, mainly because I have SOUND playing, now I know this is a strange and unusual concept to some, but it works for me.

The 4870 aftermarket cooler solution is something I will look into, thanks. As mentioned, the relativity of fan noise is making things difficult to judge. Does anyone have any more information about when 4890 cards will be available that have custom coolers? If it's a while, I might just buy the XFX one. Thanks again.

Sorry to bump the thread but could anyone tell me whether this card is going to be much louder at idle than a BFG 8800GTX? I'm quite happy with the noise levels of the 8800GTX at idle but wouldn't want anything much louder when working in office etc. Not fussed under load as the speakers will be turned up then anyway!

Cheers :)

Hi, I've just come from an 8800GTX to a 4890. You probably will notice it being a bit louder, but it is just a quiet whooshing sound. It is under my desk, and I barely notice it really. I hear people tend to mess around with the fan speeds if they aren't happy with it at idle.
