Sorry to start another thread.

I've been noticing that the M5 2000-2003 can be had for around 15k at times.

Yet the M3 from the same time period is often 20-25k. They are starting to hit 15k now.

Anyway, is the fact the M5 cheaper because of some kind of higher depreciation or simply the fact that it is now the old model because there is a new one out.

On the topic of the new M3, when is it planned to be out? Pics?

Same is true of the e39 (5 series) and e46 (3 series) in general. An e39 will cost less than the equivalent e46.

Don't be fooled by the cheap purchase price though, M5's cost a fortune to run. I imagine M3's will be a fair bit cheaper to be honest, but have no evidence to suggest that, I assume someone will have some though.

The M5 was available for two years before the M3 was. The cars you can see for less than the M3 is available are pre-facelift models - remember, the M5 appeared in 1999 on a T plate.

Plus its uber.

Except it isn't any cheaper.

51 plate M3: £22k from a dealer
51 plate M5: £24k from a dealer

Like I said, the only reason you can buy an M5 for less is becuase the M5 ran for 2 years before the M3 was introduced. It's that simple, so stop guessing reasons why an m5 the same age is cheaper, because like for like this isnt the case.

Is it because it's bigger?.

in my experience its about the same price for cars over a couple of years old, which is pretty good considering M5 was c.60k and M3 was c.45k depending on options. i think the M3 is more desireable hence the lower depreciation.

servicing costs are very similar between the two cars. in fact i think one of the inspections on the M5 is cheaper than the M3. petrol is going to be worse on the M5, but otherwise i dont think there is a huge amount in it.

fox - there are not many E39 M5 at BMW dealers and they seem to think they can charge silly money for them (look at hexagon in highgate for a prime example) if you look private its a different story.

i picked mine up for £8k less private than hexagon were asking for a similar spec car but with no aftermarket modifications.
