Question about thermal compound.

I had to buy a new mobo because the one i brought was faulty.

So obviously i had to remove the heat sink and processor. when i installed it on the stock heat sink it came with thermal compound already applied, and this goop is still on the heatsink/CPU.
the question is, do i need new thermal compound or can I just use the stuff that is still on it?

also, my dad said "I have some of that [thermal compound]". I don't know specificity what sort he has so it could rubbish, so the other question is what sort of thermal compound do i need.

What I would do is remove any and all traces of old TC with summet like this

And apply new TC. A good quality is always the best choice. I like "Thermaltake TG-1"

There are a lot to choose from, here

There are many good tuts on YouTube on this matter and it sometimes help to see others doing first..

Hope this helps

I like this tut

Also I like to use the "cross" method. Similar to that tut but I make a cross in the middle of the CPU, no spreading then apply the heatsink\cooler

This looks pretty good too

I normally wipe if off with good ol' kitchen roll and then reapply some artic silver.

Stulid did a huge review on all of the thermal compounds OcUK stock and gave the performance of each of them, very extensive review and very good to help you choose.

Should be able to dig it up under, overclocking and cooling?

Tbh I just use a tissue to wipe the old thermal paste off, no need for cleaning fluid or something like that for me.

this is what i do
clean it off with kitchen roll then dip a cotton wool bud stick in whiskey or vodka and then go over it with that then wipe again with kitchen roll
then let it dry for a few mins and then i use 1 of these (whichever oc have on the website at the time)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Prolimatech PK-1 Nano Thermal Compound (1g) £1.99
Total : £4.27 (includes shipping : £1.90).

it is the right amount and then i just do a small x in the middle
job done :D

PK-1 awesome stuff.

Recommended by innovation cooling, producers of ic diamond. They would know obviously.

They would:

Innovation Cooling said:
Proper application is critical to optimum performance. Squeeze, onto the center of the CPU, an amount of IC Diamond compound about the size of a pea (5.0mm to 5.5mm or approximately .2ml on the syringe) on the center of the CPU where heat is most concentrated. Place the heat sink on the CPU and press it down to spread IC Diamond over the CPU's surface, (caution: do not remove the sink to check the spread as it will introduce air into the joint). Clamp the heat sink and power up the PC.
Looks like you've got ten times less thermal compound on your chips than you should have!

Made a mistake with my numbers and you get rude responses, i am out of here, way too many rude forum members here.

To be fair, I only corrected you because I thought you'd made a simple mistake and I didn't want the OP to get the wrong advice. Then you were sarky, so I was more sarky. :p No need to get all emotional about it. Come here, let me give you a big hug...
