Question about upgrading monitor size from 19"

Hey guys,
I'm currently using a 19" monitor and play a lot of MMOs, which means a lot of small text. I find that on even default scale sizes in some games I have to lean fowards a lot to read some text (and no I don't need reading glasses :P) and it's getting a little annoying. While at the same time I'm picky about having plenty of space on the screen so I don't want huge UI taking up viewing space of the game. So I was wondering if it'd be worth going up to say 22/23", what's the biggest you can have a monitor at arms reach and be practical/safe? Also, can you even notice 3/4" much if it's measured diagnally? Finally, with those size monitors would the increase in resolution (19xx, up from 1680x1050) end up with roughly the same physical size of text/ui?
Cheers, and I understand if my questions need more explination!

I have a 19" and going to a 24".
Best thing to do is, if you have a store such as a certain computer superstore (with useless clueless staff that don't know their SATA from their IDE).
Go and have a look at the physical size of their display monitors. I was surprised how much bigger a 23" and 24" was and yet standing at arms length it looked ok.
Then when you know what you like come back to OC to buy it.
