This is actually a question off my daughter.

She was asking me about other people using idle time on peoples computers for things like cancer research etc and I told her OCUK have something similar with SETI.
I presume you install a programme and set your preferences?
Can this programme run while you are logged off?

Yes you can choose how and when the programs folding / boinc / seti etc run and how much of your cpu / graphics card they use. They only run when the system is not in use as well, so if you started doing some heavy editing or something they would shut down until the cpu / gpu usaged dropped (again this is something you can choose).

Some of the folding clients I think can be run as a service when logged off so long as the computer is on and not sleeping, but mostly everything is done when logged on now.

They are pretty easy to set up, and even if you only used 10% of your cpu when it was on every little helps. :) We just tend to go a bit mad round here and have everything on full whack 24/7 :D

It's a question my daughter asked because she is working on something for her Uni project but the machines would have to be logged off.

I think I whould point out that obviously, you'd have to have permission to run whatever DC program you are running on the computers.

Especially in these times of cutbacks and all facilities checking on reducing their bills.
