Question about when I should be looking to upgrade

Hi there,

My current build is a 5800x with a 3070.

I'm currently at 1080p and have no plans to move above that for a while. Everything still seems fine except for the VRAM of the 3070 is now pushing the 8gb limit on some newer titles.

When the 8gb starts capping out would it be worth getting a 5070 with 12gb to last me 3-4 years at 1080p? I know the 5070 would be overkill for 1080p, but I assume the 3070 was when I bought it at the end of 2020.

If I remember correctly, would I only need to be looking to upgrade the CPU when one of the individual threads starts hitting 100% in games consistently?

5070 is probably going to be £700+ on release with the availability issues, so I'd find that hard to justify.

I'd suggest you come back in the summer and see if stock has improved and we'll know how the nvidia cards compare with AMD's new cards.

If your happy to go to AMD then the rx 7800xt is a good upgrade (from a 3070) with 16gig of memory.
