question about windows 8 and laptop touchpad

I have a windows 7 laptop at the moment, i mainly use a mouse and have the touchpad disabled, if i upgrade to windows 8, can anyone tell me, can i use my touchpad to be able to swipe in windows 8 or would i have to use the mouse for it all?

i would have thought if you can use a mouse you can use the touchpad also
