Question about yellow box junctions

Got a driving test tomorrow and need to clear something up:

Say you are waiting at a yellow box junction to turn right but there is a car in front of you, also wanting to turn right. This car sees his destination lane is clear so moves into the box junction and waits for oncoming traffic to pass.

If there is enough space behind this car (on the yellow box junction), can I follow him into the box junction, or should I wait behind the white line, untill he clears the box junction?

Possibly a silly question but everyone I've asked, including my instructor seems a little unsure about it.

In my opinion if box junction isn't clear then you don't go into, at least thats what I remember from my driving lesson days

I wouldnt risk it - you're not going to be marked down for not following him in. If he moves into it, doesnt find a gap and sqeezes through on the orange light then you're almost certainly going to fail

I believe you can follow him in.

It's all about the exit being clear - if it is then you go, otherwise you stay.

You basically need to avoid being stuck in the box if the light changes red.

You must not enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right.

This is what I mean, some people say you can, others say don't! argh.

Going strictly by the definition I'm thinking that you shouldn't move in because, technically the car in front of you (that is waiting in the box junction to turn right) is blocking your path and you can't be sure what he'll do, maybe he'll stall or something just as he enters the new road and leaves me stuck in the box junction as the lights turn red.

Hesitation?

Is this circumstance even possible on your local test routes?

Hmm, I doubt it - unless the car in front is already moving when you approach it and there's clearly no other cars coming.

If the car in front is waiting to turn right, there's always a risk that you'll get stuck - either blocking traffic or running through a red light, neither are good situations on your test!

Not sure on the highway code etc, but thats how I'd normally drive

Don't go in if you can't get out.

If you're worried the examiner will misinterpret what you're doing, tell him. Say 'I'm hanging back because I can't be sure I'll be able to leave the keep clear'.

Box junctions. These have criss-cross yellow lines painted on the road (see 'Road markings'). You MUST NOT enter the box until your exit road or lane is clear. However, you may enter the box and wait when you want to turn right, and are only stopped from doing so by oncoming traffic, or by other vehicles waiting to turn right. At signalled roundabouts you MUST NOT enter the box unless you can cross over it completely without stopping.

There we go, you can wait behind other vehicles trying to turn right, if the exit lane is clear.

In the example pic, you could drive right up behind the green Focus.

There we go, do not enter unless these 2 circumstances are true.
-Your exit lane is clear.
-There is NOBODY else waiting to turn right.

Um your summary doesn't match the text..... That text says you MAY enter if your are only blocked by oncoming or a car in front turning right and your exit is clear

Damn editing gypsies!!!

You changed your post.

I'm not sure I would religiously follow that rule though.. What if the exit is clear and there's a car in front of you also turning right. A gap opens and he proceeds to leave the box junction only to now block your exit from the box? That is fail.

People who flout box junctions and block the traffic are a pet peeve.

Yea, I noticed miliseconds after I hit "post" for the second time.

It was then minutes while my connection waited for the edit form to arrive.

What happens though if that Focus (is it? :)) stalls, doesnt get a gap or does something stupid and just squeezes through as the light goes red....you fail whatever you do, surely?

Nope, you've crossed the line by this point. You just wait for the Focus driver to restart her engine and follow here into the clear exit lane. It's totally OK to leave the junction once the light on your entry has turned red.

Using common sense of course... if traffic has already started moving across the junction in the other direction then you'd have to give way to them.

You'd e blocking them until the prat in the focus got their engine started, I've not seen a junction where this wouldn't be the case.
