Hi peeps.

Ive just run orthos for about about half an hour with coretemp to monitor my cpu temps and during that time no error's came up or anything but coretemp reported temps around 75/71'c.

This is the main bits of my rig. E6600 C2D, 8800GTX OC, G.SKILL 6400 DDR2 RAM.

I have the cpu at stock volts.(1.35v) and ram at recommended volts as said on the ram..(2.1v).

I have an arctic freezer pro 7 on the cpu and are getting these temps running orthos overclocking the cpu to 3.2ghz from 2.4ghz..(fsb 356/357 ish x9).

The thing is what are the highest recommended temps for this cpu under an orthos stress test as im sure this is too high and have looked about but again, it seems ok with orthos after half an hour with no errors etc but high temps.

I may try reducing the fsb and see if the temps drop.

This is on an ABIT AW9D MAX MOBO.

Thanks.

p.s. this is using the Small fft's- stress cpu test.

That's extremely high with an AF7 Pro with a mild overclock like that, I'd consider a problem with the HSF itself whereby it might not be making good contact with the chip. Reseating might be a good idea, just to rule out any possibilities of a dodgy seating of the HSF.

But before that, is the fan spinning at full speed? Make sure that it's not set to some kinda "Smartfan" whereby it's not going to be running at full speed only a portion of it, which could explain the heat.

Thanks for the response flibby.

Well this mobo is a replacement one for a mobo that fubared during a bad bios flash so of course i had to re-seat the arctic freezer pro 7 on the new mobo without re-applying artic 5 thermal paste.

Im presuming i either didnt re-seat it correctly or need to take off and re-apply the arctic 5 thermal paste.

This system was one i bought from ocuk here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-032-OK&groupid=43&catid=781&subcat=

Ive just orthos at stock speeds at coretemps are 63/62 so indeed it seems ill have to try reseating the artic freezer pro 7.

Would you recommend taking off and re-applying the thermal paste and is this the correct way of doing it properly? http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appinstruct/as5/ins_as5_intel_dual_wcap.pdf

Thanks and will try re-seating and re-applying artic 5 paste akasa paste remover as i think i need possibly to re-do these properly.

The cpu fan is running at full speed as i have disabled the fan eq in the bios.

I used to know someone called Ashman from Notts... same person I wonder? SCB and Q3 mean anything to you? lol :D

On the subject, it does seem somewhat high... I'd definitely reseat it.

Indeed hohum thats me!!.. :) .

Yup temps were definetely too high.

I took the pc apart and mobo out the case so i could get to the arctic freezer easier and take it off.

Followed the step by step guide from the link in my above post on installing arctic pro 7 coolers with arctic 5 paste.

Put it all back together and..atm..im running orthos small ffts'- stress cpu and the two temps.(it being a dual core cpu of course.) are after 10 mins or so are...40/40'c!! :) so basically at stock speeds i have by seating the freezer pro and applying the thermal paste correctly shaved off about 25'c from my older readings which obviously said that i should have re-applied the arctic 5 before and made sure that i had properly locked down the freezer pro.

I think i have just learnt "properly" how to put a heatsink on and apply thermal paste correctly and these temps are at stock speeds for the cpu and ram.

Whats a safe high temp for a c2d e6600 would anyone in general say?.

Thanks for your help guys and suggestions, highly appreciated. :)

Haha, yeah guessed as much... you moved to Xbox pretty much fulltime and I have never seen you on MSN since. Same as a couple of other people I know actually (and you do too). I don't play games as much these days, but back in the SCB heyday I used an alias beginning with D. ;)

Glad you solved your problem by the way. I don't know what temps are ideal though as I don't own an Intel chip nor do I overclock, so not sure why I even looked in this section to be honest :p

Ah yes i think, you have got to be demon scb?!! surely. :)

Ill pm you my msn addy now then you can add us if ya want.

Temps are all good again after retesting this evening when i got home from work.

Orthos small fft's test, priotiy 9 so it hammers the cpu and the temps stay around 40/40 @ stock speeds...at the minute lol.. :)

One thing i have to ask though is that why in the bios does my cpu temp report it at around 32/33'c yet in windows through core temp it reports an idle temp of now around 20/22'c?

Always had me baffled this one in the difference bewteen the bios's reported temp and windows temp program like coretemp.

edit. damn for some reason it wont let me pm ya. Put ya on my buddy list on ere though.

E-mail is in trust (for now... prolly remove it later). Send your details to that if you want, it's not my MSN address though so you'll get nowhere if you add it to contact list. Regarding windows temp, it may be misreporting by pulling the reading from a different sensor unrelated to your CPU.

Oh, and you guessed right. Hello. :p

One thing i have done is disable eist and c1e in the bios's cpu features as these throttle the cpu multiplier down when the system is idle so i can now get a proper reading from cpu-z.

There is another function called thermal monitoring.

Does anyone know if this is recommended to be disabled aswell as EIST and C1E? in the bios?.

I think it is from reading other posts, just wanted to be sure.

Atm im am now running the cpu @ 2.7ghz(1.35v default) and ram @ 900mhz(2:3) 4.4.4.12.(2.1v) with the fsb @ 300x9(2.7ghz cpu) which on this board bumps up the ddr mhz to the mentioned above as i cant set the cpu and ram frequency seperatly on this mobo as it does not have an "unlink" option so of course upping the fsb also ups the ram frequency.

Othos small fft's test after 25 mins or so with these settings, max temps 41/41'c no errors or probs so far reading from coretemp.
