Hi guys,

So I now have a Kona Hybrid (Dew City)

...and I believe the rear derailleur is bent or the hanger is bent. So my plan was to replace them both.

My current derailleur is a Shimano Altus - Now is it worth upgrading this to a Shimano Acera, Alvio or Deore etc..?

...Will it even work with the rest of my setup?

Thanks

It'll probably largely depend on how many speeds your current shifters and mech are compared to whatever new mech you'd be buying.

I know shimano have compatibility charts on their website for their road bike kit, so they probably have similar for their mountain bike stuff as well. Try googling for Altus Deore compatibility or something like that.

Why not just replace the hanger?

Or take it to a LBS and get them to straighten it, cost me like £10 (if that) last time. Hangers are also pretty cheap £10~ or so.

Stick a new hanger on first.

To be honest, I'd question the point of upgrading it really. It's one of the lower (lowest?) end mechs that Shimano make, so the rest of your drivetrain will be of comparable quality. Nothing at all wrong with that, so long as it does what it's meant to.

When some of us slightly more 'bike nutty' types upgrade mechs etc, we're usually doing it either to save a little weight or to improve shifting over rough terrain / descents, which you won't be doing on a hybrid!

upgrading your crank to one with more rivet points for the chain to snag would probably be more noticeable than anything else.

Even the bikes with good drivetrains usually have **** cranksets that cost half the price of the derailer etc
