Hello all,

I have 3 computers running up in the attic, which feed down to my PC & media Centre downstairs..

the problem is, occaisionally, i have to restart the buggars using the switch (or turn back on in the event of a power cut)...

I'm thinking, would it be possible just to solder on some electrical wire to the regular case buttons, then run it downstairs to a seperate push button i'll scavenge from something? Probably about 6 meters of cable... would this work?

thank you

are they connected via network cable?

wake-on-lan is what you want :)

also, why 3, that's a LOT of wasted electricity... ?

also, bios's usually have a 'state after power outage' option

the PCs are on 24/7 - it's just when and if they crash or power cuts out i need to scramble into the roof to turn them on / reset them! so wake-on-lan doesn't really work, but thank you.

as for electricity, i don't pay!

It would be entirely possible to rip a switch from an old pc case off, extend its wires to whatever length and use that... as long as the distance wasn't ridiculous.

One is my main computer i use for every day stuff, a bit of gaming here and there

One is my media centre computer attached to big tv

One is my downloading/processing computer, also use the spare power to render some bits and bobs

so you feed a/v and control cables down from there too?

sorry was under the impression you had them sharing media to another media centre machine in living room

Yeah, all machines are upstairs! In one room, i have a bit of conduit with monitor/usb/network cables coming down, and in TV room, they come through the wall into the back of the tv / amp

exactly! the only downside is, as i mentioned, scurrying up that bloody ladder to get into the attic to reset!

What happens when you need to put in a CD though? Sounds like a bit of a mad setup.

Should be okay but it would depend on what sort of power would actually be going through the wires for that switch and I would imagine the answer would be not much. This could become a problem if you need quite a bit of wire as, the longer the wire, the higher the resistance.

External DVD writer on the main PC, and it's networked - so if i want to rip a DVD using the processing PC or the HTPC, i can

Very simple setup actually, no PC sound at all downstairs!

How about one more pimp level and rigging up some wireless doorbells to do it for you :p.

Pretty simple had it on my xbox many moons ago, just make sure you get a doorbell which just goes 'ding', rip off the speaker and solder on the switch instead. Press the button sends a 'ding' thru the switch and turns the mother on or off!

doorbell well be done - in the meantime, found a 5m phono cable - ripped a jumper/wire from an old case, wrapped the wire around each phono cable, and just touch the other ends together... very ***** like, but it works!
