Hi,
Strictly speaking if you are in 4/4 time...

can you have a crotchet followed by a minim rest then a crotchet? or should it be 2 crotchet rests instead of the minim rest??...

I remember being told once something about splitting bars and not putting a rest over the split in a bar... or something??

cheers guys.. i thought so... just wanted to make sure! I didnt know whether that rule only applied for compound time!

I've been playing music for 25 years and I don't think I've ever seen an example of a rest being split across bars in any time structure. I think it's pretty much frowned upon across the board (in my experience anyway)

The only exception would be where you have several bars rest of course, but then I've only ever seen it depicted as a full bar rest, another full bar rest etc or via the multimeasure rest if it goes on for a while.

I don't know if this will help? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rest_(music)

I also agree, was taught music from a young age and in all my time I've never seen, or never myself split a rest across bars!

It's a universal no-no.

And also, if you have full bars of rests each should have a full bar rest in it really...

I dont mean across bars.. i mean across the middle of the bar.
