Okay, I'm considering upgrading to this from an eight year old Sony STRDB940. I have an 1080p LCD, a PS3 and a BTVision PVR box which is HDMI enabled @1080i.

Now, I've been thinking about this for a while. My concern is - if I have the BTVision box routed through the amp via HDMI, will I have to have the amp switched on permanently just to watch normal freeview ? - I'm not really interested in listening to Eastenders in surround sound LOL.

The PS3 setup is a no brainer as I'm always gonna want the amp on for that anyway.

Basically - does the amp just simply pass the HDMI video / audio inputs through to the HDMI output if the amp is switched off ? (in standby of course) thus enabling me and my other half to watch / listen to standard Freeview via the TVs internal speakers.

Anyone have any advice and /or have a similar setup ?. Cheers.

Nope you will need the amp on to watch the freeview on your tv, doesnt do passive pass through unfortunately. Could you plug in your freeview bt thing direct into your tv and have optical running from tv/box for your sound when a film is on or something?

Ah - I was afraid someone was gonna say that - that would've been the perfect setup :(

Anyhow, yes I can do as you suggested - that is plan B. It's not a very elegant solution though.

You mention "passive pass through" - are there any amps out there that can do this on HDMI ? - that may well be the new plan B depending on the price.

Ye not the best, I mean I have mine set up to output my sky via surround, can imagine I will find this annoying in the summer when its pumping out the heat but it is fine for now.

I dont know of any, could you maybe output via component from your box aswell as hdmi and have one to your amp and one to the tv?

No component I'm afraid. Maybe I could use a HDMI splitter / switcher.

This is gonna need some thought before I go and buy one.

Cheers.
