Hi folks,
Just fishing for a bit of reliable info, whilst I’m also off Googling for more.
Both myself and my sister are currently listed as ‘executors’ to my Dad’s estate, I believe the term still applies anyway, as he had no will.
Long story short, we have been through probate and got that and my Dad’s death certificate has gone off to those who need it, and everything (bar his employer) is going well.
Now, last month I got a letter through – I say ‘letter’ it seemed more like a junk mail mail-shot, and was advertising a company who specialise in probate; bit like an accident management company, but for death. But the first page of the booklet was actually a letter addressed to the executor, and went on to state about £1,400 was owed to “Post Office”, and that we should contact them – I tried several times but could never get through.
Got another letter from them today stating that their client would be happy to accept about £1,000, immediately followed by “(SAVING the Estate £….)”, call me cynical, but that just seems like an attempt to make you think “oooh I’ve got a great deal” and not at all the sort of wording I’d expect to see on a letter going out to a grieving family; though as my company always remind us – business not charity…
I’ve googled the company (Phillips & Cohen Associates) and I’m working through the results to see if the company is legit, but I can’t help but shake off the feeling that they’re just trying it on – maybe hoping that with everything else we have going on and all other bills coming in, we’d happily pay this off without question….
Don’t get me wrong, I will happily settle anything we are legally obliged to, but I lived with my Dad and he often talked about bills and finances, and where had was going etc to pay them, but never once did he mention “Post Office”, nor did he go into a post office to pay bills.
So I guess my question to the good folk of OcUK is – has anyone else experienced this sort of thing, and if so, what did you do?
Thanks.
