I go in 3 days a week, from 9-4pm or so. Average hours per week (lectures, seminars) is around 16. But we have work and stuff to do on top of that. So 20 hours/week sounds about right.
In first and second year I had a lot of free time as I found the course really easy and got high marks without much work. Aside from around 15 hours or so of class I'd do little else. I continued along that work ethic in third year which resulted in me completely mucking it up and requesting a full resit.
In my second attempt at 3rd year I treated it as a 9-5 job. In 4th year I realised I was a lucky lad to have been allowed to resit the previous year so I made the most of it and put in a hell of a lot of work. During the week I used to stay in from around 10am-10pm a lot of days - giving myself the weekend off normally.
As for myself, I'm a fourth year student in physics and maths and have 8 contact hours a week (should be 10 but I have two clashes on my lecture timetable). Doesn't sound like much, but the amount of work needed outside lectures is huge. Realistically I only have a few spare hours every week. I should be working right now really. Ugh.
The going was much easier in earlier years, of course.
no, ofcourse you will find a-levels hard, stuff just becomes easier as you progress...
i'm doing Mechanical engineering, which is one of the more time consuming subjects, and i've got 15hours compulsory a week plus about 6 optional hours, of which i plan to probably turn up to about 3.. You've also gotta ask yourself how many hours outside lectures you're going to spend.. and how much you plan on going out.. i'm finding that i can only really cope with 2 proper nights out a week, and tbh i couldn't afford any more.
- a better question is how many hours work do you, then you can see how much sleep you can cram into life... and the remainder is free time
I know people who are doing teaching only going in two days a week.
I'm doing Law and I'm in four days a week and have nine and hours and some times a fair bit more than that. My timetable changes weekly.
Though you may think 'only nine hours a week' however all the seminars require a lot of preparation. You can't just turn up without doing the work as when you get picked on or asked to join in the discussion you look stupid! Add all the 'required reading' time on top of that.
First year is a breeze though. Lectures are easy to catch up on and seminar prep is minimal.. not even looking at the books untill exam time
4th year engineering. I have 8 hours of lectures a week, a couple of hours of supervisions, and the rest of the time I spend on my project, coursework, or lecture work. I can take as much free time as I like really, but realistically, I get very little. I work until 9pm most evenings, but fit things in during the day: football, gym, etc.
