Hi all,

Could I pick the brains of anyone in the know...

I am using an old HP Compaq Core 2 Duo (E8400) to run a Minecraft server for my son and a few of his friends.

The installed memory is 4GB of DDR2 PC-6400 (240 pin), comprising of 2 x 2GB DIMMS. The maximum memory capacity for the machine is 8GB, so I figured I'd up the memory a bit. However, it turns out that this kind of memory is hellishly expensive were I to just buy some online. No surprise I suppose given its yesterday's tech.

Anyway, today I got excited when I realised that I have 2 x 1 GB PC-6400 sticks in my box of PC bits.

So question...could I stick the 1GB DIMMS in, and have 6GB (2 x 2GB + 2 x 1GB)?? Would this mean running in flex mode rather than dual-channel, and if so, would the performance hit negate any gain from having the extra 2GB in there?

Any input appreciated.

Many thanks.

You could just stick em in and try it out?, go inti the bios and see if it's all recognized, detected and functioning ok?, that's what i would do.

Just pop the 2 1Gb sticks in the 2 empty slots.

Dual channel needs RAM in pairs.

A pair of 2Gb and a pair of 1Gb will work fine together.
Don't mix them in the same channel though.
