No it's not normal.
What's the model of your tv, your soundbar and how are they connected?

I have the Sony KDL-42W706B + Sony HT-XT3

Connected via digital out

KabelDirekt 1.5m Optical TOSLINK Digital Audio Cable - PRO Series

Optical lead will sort it I reckon but let one of the "Experts" confirm it before shelling out a mighty 7 quid for a cheap one to test. :p

RTFM.... Read the 'flipping' manual. It's in the section about "Options". Look for 'A/V Sync'. This adjusts the timing between picture and sound.

I presume you've been through your TVs audio settings? There is often a delay that you can set/change there.

Alternatively if you're watching through Sky then your Sky settings can change this too.

I wouldn't expect the optical lead to be a problem, but if you can't think of anything else to change then it doesn't even cost £7 for a new one.

How could an optical cable cause any noticeable delay?
Are the 1s and 0s stopping off half way down the cable for a pint at the pub? :p

It will be a sync issue between the circuit from source to screen and from source to sound bar speaker.

One question that hasn't been asked is that you say "over the last couple of days", so does that mean it was fine up until a couple of days ago?
Have you changed anything a couple of days ago?
TV firmware update, change any cables, power cut that might have reset TV settings etc?

I done a firmware update on my Sony HT-XT3 a few weeks

^ good post ^

You're correct too, changing the optical cable is a dumb move; it's not the culprit. The cause is the processing delays within the various digital processing stages. That's why LipSync or A/V sync exists.

Since TheHitMan-1973 was unaware of the A/V sync feature on the soundbar despite claiming to have read the manual then we can probably safely presume a similar level of knowledge on the other gear too. That could mean then that nothing has changed; this is just the first time he has noticed it.

Lip Sync can vary by channel and by TV source. If using Freeview then it would be worth doing a factory reset followed by a "first time install" tuning on the TV just to be sure it is working with a clean set of channel data. After that it's a question of setting up the soundbite correctly.
