Question on 4870x2

Would I be correct in saying that the extra core on an 4870x2 will not be utilized if there isn't proper driver support for it other wise the 4870x2 would be seen as a single 4870 card in a gaming application?
Is this correct?

Yes thats correct, if the games not Crossfire supported, then the X2 will only run as a single 4870.

I'd be a teeny bit mifffed if none of my games were xfire and I'd just made a charity donation to ATI for a second GPU I couldn't use.

That's exactly what im looking at at this point 4870 or a GTX280 the 4870 1GB is on my list pending good reviews failing that it will be between a 512GB 4870 or GTX280.

Even the 512mb 4870 is good enough as ATi have better texture compression than Nvidia, as as you can see from reviews, at 1920x1200, the 4870 with its 512mb of memory is actually beating the GTX 280 with its 1gb in some, and thats with having AA on as well, but you may as well wait for the 1gb 4870 see how it fares as its about due, but tbh, if its about the same as the 512mb, then id still take the 4870 512mb over the GTX 280, as its only around 10% slower, and 10% isn't worth paying an extra £70+ for.

Yeah good advice, thats why im waiting for reviews on the 1GB version. My new system is already built just wating for GPU to fire her up.
