Can anyone explain to me why the mobile broadband surfing experience on a train can be better when using a smartphone instead of when using your laptop with a USB modem?

The laptop experience tends to be frustrating as you go in and out of 3G areas, so how come the smartphone experience can be better?

Thanks

Because a smart phone can use EDGE and GPRS more effectively because they're not downloading so much data at a guess.

Although saying that, it's not that great on my iphone either but it's bearable. The trick is to open all the pages you want to read before you leave the station in separate tabs :p
