Question on powerline adapters / wired to a WiFi adapter

Hi all

I might be missing something obvious here... Any ideas?

I need something to turn a port on an NVR into a wireless hot-spot that can be connected to which will feed all data from the client (a WiFi camera) to the NVR as if it was wired to the NVR.

Will clear up some points before someone mentions them

- NVR is on a different subnet to my WiFi network
- NVR doesn't support WiFi cameras natively so doesn't have its own hot-spot
- I don't think powerline adapters will work as one end will be on a different fuse in the fuse box ... Unless that's OK? I've never used a powerline adapter in my life so not sure if they support that?

Thanks!

Different fuse shouldn't be an issue. People often have problems with them connecting to their neighbours powerline adaptors if they haven't been set up with encryption.

Do you mean a different subnet, or a different network segment, as in they aren't even wired to each other, as opposed to being wired together but with IPs on different subnets.

Do you have a DHCP server on the subnet that the NVR will be on? Powerline adaptors I've seen don't have their own DHCP server, and you'll probably need one for the wifi cameras.

Do you really need a powerline adaptor, or do you just need a wifi network wired to the NVR? Something like https://www.tp-link.com/uk/products/details/cat-10_TL-WA850RE.html

Thanks for the response.

The cameras have their own IP range that is via DHCP from the NVR. The NVR has only one address and physical connection on the "normal" home network for management.

I think I'll give powerline adapters a shot then by the sounds of things. I possibly didn't make it obvious that the camera has both wired and wireless options. I reckon powerline adapters will be the most appropriate to make the NVR think that the camera is directly connected to one of its ports. Would also rather have wired vs wireless.

Will grab some and give it a shot...thanks!

I'd go with wired if possible too. I've read wireless isn't great for cameras as they can be hacked.
Remember to set up the encryption when pairing the powerline adaptors. Also note even the ones sold as gigabit will only actually do about 100Mbs (10MBs) over the power line.

What kit have you bought? I was thinking about getting a night vision one set up to record out the back of my house.

Cool will check out the encryption if I go ahead with it

The main kit is all Hikvision branded (2342 and 2335 cameras.. Very very good stuff, feature rich but comes with a price). But I just happened to get given a cheapo £40 vikcam from amazon so thought I might add it onto the system and the desired location doesn't have cat5e run there unfortunately

Just a quick FYI. The H265+ cameras are far superior in terms of filesize. Around 10-15% the size of H264 for a 1080P stream.

Cheers that's a good point

I mentioned in the hik thread the other day .. Someone pointed out I should have swapped the 2342 for the 2355 but I wasn't aware at the time. Luckily majority of the cameras in my system are the 2335 anyway. That really is some improvement on the storage front!

Yup.

It's so much better than the former, that it makes no sense to get anything but h265+.
