Question on security of Virtual and Host PCs with VMWare

I have a PC running XP Home SP2 which I have installed VMWare Server on.
How secure will the host PC be from anything running or getting downloaded on the virtual PCs?
I am thinking from the point of view of viruses, trojans etc that may infect the host PCs data.
I am not bothered if the virtual PC gets infected as I can just recover it. Having said that it would have software antvirus and firewall installed, as does the host PC.

At least one virtual machine would be publicly available as I want to test something from work so it would be open but firewalled - if I set it up right
Don't want to compromise the host machine though whilst I am testing.
