Question on speed upgrade

Hi all,

Long time reader here, excellent forum.

I have searched for the answer to this problem but I don't really know what terms to use in the search and thus can't find an answer.

Basically I have been on a 0.5Mbit service with Pipex for a while now and they upgraded me today to a 1Mbit connection. My line attenuation and SNR levels are more than good enough for 1Mbit and BT have confirmed this.

The issue I'm having is that in my router status it says I'm connected @ 1152 down instead of the 576 I had before, yet I have run the speed test on ADSLGuide and have tried downloading files from the net and everything indicates I'm still @ 0.5Mbit speeds. File downloads top out at 55-60KB/s like they did before, no matter where I download from, and the speed test says I'm on 0.5Mbit too.

So I'm confused! If Pipex have upgraded me to 1Mbit, and I'm connected at that speed, why am I still seeing the download speeds of old? Do I have to wait a couple of days for the speed to increase or have they messed up a setting perhaps on their end?

Any advice would be great, as I'm sure a lot of you have been upgraded in speed before and can shed some light on this. Perhaps I'm being impatient but I like things to work as they should and quite frankly I don't intend to stay on hold to Pipex for another 40 minutes!

Thanks in advance.

Dave.

Sounds like Pipex have screwed up, though there's an easy way to be sure - try the BT Speedtest (see sticky for instructions).

the normal BT one does not work properly with the Max service

Yes it does. It doesn't give the BRAS limit or give accurate results for >4Mbps, but it would trivially show if the connection was capable of >1Mbps...

I'm supposed to be on standard 1Mbit rather than ADSL max. I haven't noticed any speed fluctuation so far and speeds reflect 1Mbit again, which is good. I emailed them last night and when I got home this evening the speed had improved but I received some strange replies from Pipex. I'll quote a couple of the odd parts. They look to be automated replies so maybe this is a bog standard message but one email said:

"Your regraded Retention 1000 (o17.99) ADSL service is due to be activated on 15/06/2006. "

Which makes little sense as that was ages ago. And the other email says:

"You may experience fluctuating broadband performance for around 10 days as we determine the optimum stable rate that your phone line can support. Fluctuations and dropped connections are perfectly normal during this time, which is referred to the 10 Day Stabilisation Period. "

Which sounds like ADSL Max. :S

"My Pipex" shows a blank space for the name of my service so I'm none the wiser. I guess I'll see how things go but at the moment it looks ok.

Thanks for the replies.

Mine's the same, and all the other details are missing. Either something's gone pear-shaped or they're updating the site.
