Hi folks, I have a decent 17" CRT at the mo but im thinking of switching to a 19" TFT but I don't really know that much about them.

The thing is on my current rig I like to run games in 1024x768x32 high detail and I can't seem to find a TFT with a "native" resolution of this. They all seem to have a really high native res and I doubt very much i would be able to run my games in that res with my current setup (at least not a a decent framerate/detail level)

My question is, what do TFT's perform like at non native res? with my CRT I can basically have any res i like (within reason of course) and it will look good at that res for games. Whereas with TFT I have heard that they crisper at their optimised res but are not as good at most other resolutions. Can someone tell me if this is true and bring me up to speed?

Will say, Oblivion or any other game look as good on a TFT at 1024x768 as it does on my CRT at that res.

Thanks guys

FYI my spec is

athlon 64 4000 san diago
XFX geforce 7800 GS (AGP)
2 gig (corsair xms3200)
ASROCK DUAL SATA II

You're right, TFTs work best at their native resolution and will be noticeably blurry if you run them at lower than native. (1280x1024 is standard for 17" and 19" LCDs, so you won't find anything different.)

I also used to have a 17" CRT and I was worried about not being able to run everything at the native resolution of my 19" LCD. My system is less powerful than yours (see sig) but I've had no real problems.

There are a few occasions where I've had to turn detail levels down from maximum, but it's worth the compromise and I enjoy the games so much more on the new screen.

With your spec there is no reason why you cannot run it at the native 1280x1024 res of the tft. I always turn off AA and AF filtering and get things running smoothly maxing out the settings first, then adding filtering if i feel there is still plenty in reserve.

Just did a little test, running Oblivion on my 19" CRT and my 17" TFT (native res 1280*1024) both in 1024*768 in clone mode and although the image is a touch softer on the TFT, it's not a big deal. We're not talking blurry here at all and it doesn't affect colours at all.

My screens are virtually the same size btw (identical height, just the CRT is a bit wider) so it's a pretty fair comparison.

The only problem with 1024*768 on a 19" TFT could be the actual pixel size so you might notice aliasing more.
