Question re 2d/3d clock speeds

I'm concerned my x1900xt is permanently running at 2d clock speeds (500/590). Playing games like BF2 I am seeing no real performance increase over my old x850xt pe and can't run at any higher settings than I did without jerking. My FPS is going between 25-70 all the time when I try to run everthing on high and it's just not smooth at all. :(

Other components are:
AMD 3200 64
2Gb RAM

When I alt tab out of BF2 (or any other game) and look at the speeds in ATI tool or ATI overdrive the speeds are the 2D ones. Is this because i've went back to desktop or is it stuck at 2D speeds?

Yes. Try overclocking the card with ATI overdrive and see if your 3DMark score increases at all. If it does the 2d/3d clocks are working correctly, because it's only the 3D clocks which you can overclock. I'm sure the card is working right though. The only way to see the 3D clocks as the current clocks in CCC is to have dual screen and run a full screen game on one screen while having CCC open on the other. The 3D clocks only apply for full screen apps, and of course as soon as you alt-tab back to the desktop, the game is no longer rendering anything so CCC drops the clocks back to 2D.

BF2 isn't generally a very efficient game, and you should look into overclocking or replacing your CPU so it's a better match for your video card. Turn off the advanced IQ settings (AA, AAA etc) if you are using them or run a lower res.

OK I tried dual screen and it appears OK. However, when I overclock and start running 3Dmark it just jumps back down to the 3d stock speeds.

Still seems strange BF2 doesn't run any better than my old card. I would have thought i'd be able to get some performance increase going from an x850xt pe to a x1900xt but so far i'm not seeing any.

As for turning off AA/reducing res, i'm don't want go DOWN from what I had on my old card!!

Anyway, i'll try some overclocking of my CPU until I get a new one next month to see if it helps.

Thanks for your help btw :)
