I have windows 7 installed on a hard drive at the mo but I have a new SSD and a copy of windows 8 (upgrade) that I bought ages ago when it was £25.

I don't have time to backup and transfer everything today, but I wanted check that I can just unplug my hard drive with windows 7 on it and plug in my new SSD and have a play with windows 8 for a bit?

My worry is that if I use my windows 7 key for the windows 8 upgrade, I won't be able to use my windows 7 install anymore?

Hopefully that is not the case?

It should be fine however if you only have the upgrade disc/ISO then it may want Windows 7 installed as it'll be expecting to upgrade something. There are ways to do a clean install with an upgrade, never looked into it myself but some quick searches on Google will no doubt help :)
