Am I right in thinking that if I go for say an Icy Box NAS which isn't compatible with the PS3 due to not having DNLA that if I install Linux on the PS3 then I can stream from the NAS and just access the NAS in general?

Can't see why not, as I know people have used linux and connected to file shares on their LAN with it.

I am in the same boat as you, sort of. I have a D-Link NAS but it is not DNLA so I can only access it from other machines on my network, but not the ps3.

It would appear that Twonky (trial with the 4220) will allow the 4220 to work with the PS3:-

P.s. I also found references to people installing Twonky on the DLink DNS-323 and it working with the PS3.

P.p.s. Disclaimer: Do your own research first though.

Unfortunately it isn't free but there is a trial.

www.twonkymedia.com for Twonky itself and the first google result for 'ps3 nas' is a guide to setting it up on a D-link NAS.

One bad thing though, it seems Twonky will be stopping support for the user installable version of Twonky for NAS after the 4.4.x versions and only supplying it to device manufacturers after that.

edit: theres an entire D-link section on the twonky support forums.
