Ok i have got the following - Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB)

Asus p5k Deluxe which support Dual-channel DDR2 1066/800/667 MHz

Am i right in thinking that i should get DDR2 8500+ memory which also runs at 1066mhz ?

No. You only need that if you are going to do some pretty keen overclocking.

Although the Conroe FSB is quoted as 1066MHz it is actually 266MHz quad-pumped (4 x 266 = 1064).

You can quite happily run 533MHz DDR2 (2x266=532MHz) with that CPU at stock. Buying more expensive memory and running that on a multiplier is a waste of money IMO.

If you do want to overclock, then 800MHz should be more than ample to be able to OC the CPU to a decent level and keep the memory running at 1:1.
