Er I probably should have asked this before I started but Ive just successfully overclocked my E8500 from 3.16GHz to 3.806GHz and after benchmarking have found I have increased my FPS by approximately 1fps -what exactly is the point of overclocking if that's all the difference it makes?

fun and a free performance boost!

Plus its depends on what bench you ran for that 1fps gain. Some apps/games may see much more advantage

Everything is a trade off... Overclocking will give you a faster PC but it will use more power and give off more heat. If overclocking makes little or no difference to the games or apps you run then there is little point in overclocking.

On the other hand, a lot of non-realtime apps such as encoding video really benefits from overclocking, and as was said above, pretty much free performance. Remember not everyone uses the same apps and games, there's no point in building a quad core rig just to play minesweeper!

Yep your right weescot I jumped to conclusions after trying just one piece of software, Ive now tried other software and there is a significant increase in FPS on some of them (the Devil may cry benchmark for instance) so yeah sorry for rushing in so fast there.

@MikeHunt79 good point you made about different people using PC's for different things I never stopped to think about the people who use proper hardcore apps like encoding software and modelling software for graphic art and stuff of course it will help them a lot, my bad lol
